Spotlight on Oxfordshire County Council, with Martin Reeves, CEO

Martin, can you talk a little about why OCC decided to integrate a focus on menopause into its wellbeing strategy?

As an organisation we value diversity, equality, and inclusivity. We recognise that a significant proportion of our colleagues may experience perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms as they transition through this period in their lives. We want to be able to support those colleagues.

Focusing on the menopause as part of our broader wellbeing strategy will encourage open conversation. It helps build awareness, highlight support available, provide opportunities for colleagues to come together to share stories so they don’t feel alone. We also provide training opportunities for our line managers; so they feel confident in having sensitive and supportive discussions and colleagues feel confident to approach them.

Supporting our colleagues through the menopausal transition can improve their health and wellbeing.  This assists them to thrive within the workplace but can also have a positive impact on their home lives.

You're leading the way for male allies within the organisation by attending one of the male-only sessions - how do you define being a male ally and what advice would you have for others who might feel worried about saying or doing the 'wrong thing' when talking to someone going through the menopause transition?

I attended a male-only session in my previous authority and through the resources that were made available and the safe space created for conversations, where no question was considered to be foolish,  meant that I learned so much. However, I know that there is still so much more for me to be educated on.  I want to be able to support colleagues transitioning through the menopause in the best way possible, which is why I’m keen to attend the webinar. I want to foster an environment that is truly inclusive, where we can openly and sensitively talk about our health and wellbeing.

To my male colleagues, I would say attend the course, learn more about the impact of the menopause. I’m sure we will all learn something that will help us understand and support family, friends, and colleagues.

What other steps is OCC taking to create a culture of psychological safety where people feel comfortable openly discussing their experiences with menopause in the workplace?

We are striving to reduce the stigma surrounding the menopause, so it does not remain a taboo subject and colleagues feel safe to openly discuss their experiences. This is being achieved through our organisational wide menopause awareness sessions, which are open to colleagues that identify as male or female. Our line managers have the opportunity to attend sessions on how best to support colleagues through the menopause.

We also have an active menopause group on Yammer and share stories and lived experiences through our wellbeing newsletter.  We will continue to work with our colleagues to encourage open conversation and disseminate accurate information to create a positive and inclusive culture.

What it’s like to work with us…

  • "Working with Emma and Beth has been such a great experience: from their willingness to design bespoke sessions that fit our needs as an organization, to their flexibility around scheduling, plus the quality content of the sessions, which have been extremely well received. We're already looking forward to our next round of sessions, including one our CEO will be involved in to signpost just how important this topic is to OCC's wellbeing strategy..."

Vanessa Poole, Health and Wellbeing Manager, Oxfordshire County Council

  • “Emma delivered an excellent session, providing useful information and guidance not only to those experiencing perimenopause and menopausal symptoms, but also educating co-workers and managers wishing to learn how to better support their colleagues. An important workplace topic, delivered well and with sensitivity! I look forward to working with Managing the Menopause again in the future.”

Tara Kay, Wellbeing Manager, John Wiley & Sons

  • “We recently had the pleasure of hosting Emma at South Western Ambulance Service Menopause Café. Emma’s knowledge and presentation was informative and engaging and Emma really took time to listen and respond to questions and comments in a supportive and educational way. We are grateful for her time and knowledge with such an important matter affecting many of our people and would love to welcome her back again.”

Sarah Jenkins, Head of Operations, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

  • "I just want to say a big THANK YOU for highlighting the potential impacts of menopause in the workplace. Working remotely, conversations around this don't happen as part of my day to day working experience, so your community-building work is really valuable to me!"

    Client feedback

  • "The opportunity to spend time talking about such an important subject that's too often seen as just something you 'get on with'"

    Ask the GP feedback

  • "On behalf of AirTanker’s Women’s Network, our Exec sponsor, and myself… Our sincere THANKS for your preparation, participation and excellent input! The feedback received has been very positive!"

    Wellbeing & Inclusion Manager, AirTanker

  • "My question was expertly answered in an empathetic and kind way, and I felt both reassured and understood. I also felt I gained the right information and that it was provided in an accessible and appropriate way. Thank you."

    Ask the GP feedback

  • "Would 100% recommend this to colleagues - it is absolutely imperative that men across OCC engage with this and become better, more educated and aware allies to our female colleagues at all levels"

    Men[o]pause session feedback

  • "I would like to thank you and Beth for the session yesterday. Its just so nice to be able to talk about the struggles our community face and hope to break down some barriers."

Ask the GP LGBTQIA+ session feedback

  • "Emma ran a very informative, clear and compassionate session for our colleagues. She was happy to tailor the session to meet our specific brief, and we’ve had excellent feedback from colleagues who attended the session. Her work has helped us to continue to create a more inclusive and informed workplace."

Kate Hughes, Cambridge University Press & Assessment

  • "It feels very empowering to be a part of an organisation which allows such discussions as this, and to be able to tell your manager you're not able to work because of menstrual/menopause symptoms. I'm so grateful!"

    Demystifying Menopause session feedback

  • "The slides on how to support a team member and/or how to talk to a line manager about what is happening were very helpful. I'm fortunate enough to have a good manager who has listened and understands my experience, but I know some colleagues don't get the same support as I do."

    Manager training session feedback

  • "The presenter was incredibly knowledgeable. I'd submitted a question beforehand about my symptoms which was answered directly. It gave me validation that I have been experiencing perimenopause for the last 2 years despite my doctor telling me I was too young at 42 with no blood test (I'm now 44). The session also highlighted other symptoms (e.g. chronic ear itching, thinning hair and sweating) that I hadn't attributed to perimenopause. The 'Managing the Menopause' PDF to help with doctors appointment is very helpful too. THANK YOU!"

    Ask the GP feedback

  • "So many things I just didn't know! I felt quite emotional during the session because menopause symptoms (and women's issues, generally) are so often shameful or the butt of a joke. To have an informed, direct and honest session felt amazing. I now feel empowered to go and talk to my GP. Whereas, prior to the session, I felt much more reluctant about that and felt like I would be shooed out without being listened to. Well, they're going to listen to me now! Thank you so much to Dr Beth. Absolutely amazing. Life changing stuff."

    Ask the GP feedback

  • "I am not currently perimenopausal, but I am educating myself around the topic as obviously I may well go through many of the symptoms and experiences you have discussed. I'm still stunned by how little info young women are given around something that they will all go through, to a lesser or greater extent. However, I do have two women in my team who are perimenopausal - it's a topic we've talked about openly - but these tips are really super helpful. Thank you."

Menopause for HR professionals Webinar feedback

  • "Just wanted to say how incredibly helpful I found it - especially the explanation that you can still be having periods and be experiencing symptoms of the menopause. That's exactly where I am right now, and I couldn't understand how that could be the case, so haven't been to see my GP for fear of seeming an idiot. Thanks so much."

    Demystifying Menopause feedback

  • "I’d definitely recommend this session to a colleague: I found it very informative and actually my wife went through a period of anxiety and panic attacks when she was driving a few years back and we never linked it to the menopause until discussing your course with her."

    Men[o]pause session feedback

  • "So much information - and all explained, with the reasoning and explanation behind different options and why some options would be better for different people, and what the different considerations are. I have been experiencing some symptoms i had put down to iron deficiency or fatigue which I now think might be the start of peri menopause, I'm going to find out more and make a GP appointment - thank you"

    Ask the GP feedback

  • "I liked how clear and realistic Beth was, and how Emma had structured the questions to provide a narrative."

    Ask the GP feedack

  • "We were looking to find a speaker to help us cover the topic of the intersection of Age & Gender in the workplace. From our first approach Emma was brilliant. She listened to our ideas, engaged with them in a thoughtful way and was able to build on them to craft a fantastic session. Working with Emma was really easy. We had to reschedule the session due to a major event within the company and she was really understanding and flexible. On the day we had some technical difficulties at our end and Emma was so professional and was able to adapt her session on the fly. The session content was excellent, totally fit the brief and exceeded expectations. The slides were great but it was her engaged delivery, command of the material, and the seamless way with which she wove together the different aspects of the topic which really impressed. The feedback from colleagues to the session has been excellent. With an aging workforce and multi-generational workplaces, ageism is an important topic for employers and ERGs to be thinking about and Emma is an excellent partner to work with."

Dr Fiona Counsell, Taylor & Francis, Women in Publishing ERG

  • "I thought it was a really good session which broadly covered all the key information. I was very impressed! I used to lead on perimenopause and menopause education and support in my previous job, so I was interested to see what training was available for staff at OCC. All the information was right up to date, accurate and helpful. Emma delivered it very clearly and obviously has a great deal of experience and knowledge on the subject."
